Caterpillar Hearts Activity

Caterpillar Hearts Activity

A hungry caterpillar inspired word work activity to encourage your little learners to practice their spellings! Inspired by a well loved children's book!

How do you use this Word Work activity?

The hungry caterpillar loves tricky words. Can you put a heart round the 'tricky' part of the word. This is the part of the word that is not making its usual sound. Then the hungry caterpillar will be able to eat the correct part later!

To support your child with this task you can read the word to them or with them. Then sound out the word phonetically using their most common sounds- see if your child can notice which part of the word is not making its usual sound.

Why should you use Word Work activities?

This task is particularly helpful for children to explore each tricky word and notice which parts are phonetical and which parts we need to learnt by 'heart'.

When your little learners write their spelling repeatedly and frequently, it can help with the memorization of those spellings. This is particularly important for tricky words, which cannot be easily segmented with phonics (broken down into sounds). Word work tasks are a method to support spelling practice and should be used alongside other methods.
